What happens to my pool waste?

Leisure Loop 4 step process

The pool waste is shredded, cleaned, and transformed into recycled plastic panels. These panels can be used to build structures like swimming pool changing rooms, as seen here at Sea Lanes in Brighton!

By uniting swimming pools and their users across the nation, we can work together to build a true circular economy. Every pool and swimmer plays a part in reducing waste and creating sustainable solutions for the future. Together, we’re not just recycling – we’re reshaping the future of our facilities.

For more information on the recycling process, visit PROTOMAX.

We're very proud to partner with them to achieve this new recycling process of converting pool waste into new changing room facilities.

Why does swimming equipment end up in landfills?

Every year, millions of pieces of swimming equipment, from swim caps to goggles, are discarded and sent to landfill. Made from non-biodegradable materials like silicone, rubber, and mixed polymer plastics, this equipment is difficult to recycle using conventional methods due to its complex composition. Most recycling facilities aren't equipped to process these materials, leading to an increasing environmental burden. Leisure Loop is the only scheme designed to tackle this unique pool waste. By transforming discarded swim gear into recycled plastic panels, we offer a circular solution. These panels are used to create swimming pool changing rooms, like the ones at Sea Lanes in Brighton, giving swim equipment a new life within the very industry it came from. These recycled changing rooms have a lifecycle of 15-20 years, providing long-term sustainability. When their lifecycle ends, the materials can be recycled again by us, ensuring that waste stays out of landfills and remains part of the circular economy, benefiting leisure facilities and the environment. By joining the Leisure Loop scheme, swimming pools not only help reduce landfill waste but also make significant carbon savings. If every pool in the UK becomes part of the scheme, we’ll create an accessible, nationwide recycling network for all swimmers. This would further reduce environmental impact, making it easy for swim users and facilities to play their part in building a sustainable, circular future for the swimming industry.
