What happens to my pool waste?

Leisure Loop 4 step process

The pool waste is shredded, cleaned, and transformed into recycled plastic panels. These panels can be used to build structures like swimming pool changing rooms, as seen here at Sea Lanes in Brighton!

By uniting swimming pools and their users across the nation, we can work together to build a true circular economy. Every pool and swimmer plays a part in reducing waste and creating sustainable solutions for the future. Together, we’re not just recycling – we’re reshaping the future of our facilities.

For more information on the recycling process, visit PROTOMAX.

We're very proud to partner with them to achieve this new recycling process of converting pool waste into new changing room facilities.

Working to educate the next generation of swimmers.

We’re committed to teaching the next generation of swimmers about the importance of sustainability. Your membership includes swimming lesson resources to help children learn how their swim gear can impact the environment and how recycling schemes like Leisure Loop can make a difference. By educating young swimmers about eco-friendly practices, we’re not only building strong swimming skills but also fostering a sense of environmental responsibility that will benefit both our pools and the planet.

*Calculations are an approximate guideline based on an average UK pool recycling 15kg of waste every month. When you join the scheme, each centre receives accurate automated reports after each collection of pool waste.

Why does swimming equipment end up in landfills?

As a pool operator, you’re all too aware of the sheer volume of equipment used in your centres. From poolside gear and everything stored in the pool store, to the swim caps, goggles, and other items you sell—or the ones that end up in lost property—it’s a lot! Unfortunately, most of this equipment has traditionally ended up in landfill because it’s made from materials that are difficult to recycle through conventional means. Without the right infrastructure, it continues to contribute to long-term environmental damage. Swimming equipment generally falls into two categories: mixed plastic polymers and foam. Neither of these materials is typically considered recyclable—until now.

Leisure Loop offers the solution your pool has been looking for—or maybe didn’t even realise it needed. We’ve developed a unique recycling scheme that transforms discarded swim gear into sustainable, recycled plastic panels. These panels are used to build durable, eco-friendly swimming pool changing rooms, like the ones at Sea Lanes in Brighton. This gives your waste a second life, right back into the swimming industry. Not only does this system reduce waste, but it also ensures that your facility can proudly showcase its commitment to sustainability, helping to set a new standard within the leisure sector.

The benefits don’t stop there. By recycling your pool’s swim gear, you’ll also significantly reduce carbon emissions that are automatically calculated after each collection from your site. As more pools across the UK join this movement, we’re building a nationwide recycling network that’s accessible to all swimmers. This makes it easier than ever for pool operators and users to reduce their environmental impact and actively contribute to a more sustainable future for swimming.
